Abstract
With the continuous development of society, the power load of urban is growing rapidly. However, in contrast to the increasing urban grid power load, the power transmission channels within cities are becoming saturated, land resources are scarce, and the conventional cables are difficult to meet the growing needs of urban power grid expansion since the transmission capacity of conventional cables has approached their capacity limits. As a new type of electric cable made of high temperature superconducting(HTS) material, HTS cable has several technical advantages such as large current-carrying capacity, low loss, small volume, environment friendliness, current self-limit and so on. It provides a viable solution to the dilemma between the expansion of urban power grid and the shortage of land resource. Therefore, in order to explore the feasibility of applying HTS cable in urban power grids, based on the existing structure of urban power grids and the challenges encountered during capacity expansion, the potential application scenarios of HTS cables in urban grids were investigated based on its technical advantages. Furthermore, for different application scenarios, a comparative analysis of the overall costs between HTS cables and conventional cables was provided under the same conditions. The conclusion could provide a foundation for evaluating the feasibility of deploying HTS cables in various scenarios in the future.
