Preparation and Properties of UV-Resistant Polyethylene Colored Compounds for Cable Sheathing

Abstract
Six types of UV-resistant polyethylene colored cable sheath materials were prepared by optimizing the formula. Effects of different combinations of antioxidants (Irganox 1010/TH-168), UV absorbers (UV-531), and light stabilizers (LS-770) on material properties were systematically investigated. Experimental results indicated that the best comprehensive properties were exhibited by sample 4# (containing Irganox 1010, TH-168, UV-531, and LS-770). An oxidation induction time of 157 min was achieved, and excellent thermal oxidation stability was demonstrated. Variation of tensile strength and elongation at break after thermal aging were within ±25%. Moreover, variation of mechanical properties after UV aging was less than 5%, and color difference was less than 2. Besides, no obvious cracks on the surface of sample 4# after UV aging were observed by scanning electron microscopy analysis, and its excellent UV aging resistance was confirmed. Overall, a theoretical basis and practical formula reference for the development of high-performance weather-resistant cable sheath materials were provided.
